SleepMD’s formula contains: White willow extract, Valerian Extract (root) Lemon Balm extract, Hops extract, Lavender powder, Melatonin, Passion, Coenzyme Q10 and Scutellaria lateriflora powder.

SleepMD’s formula is based on a technology, which they call a “groundbreaking process” called of Nano-Diffuse. This process is said to be able to reduce “the size of a precise portion of the formula's primary ingredient to near-micron size, allowing the dissolution process to begin right on your tongue”. First off – there is very little information available about this “technology”, which we found to be rather troubling. Many products claim that they use “new” and “effective” technology, yet they do not back up these claims with real verifiable research data. This seems to be the case with this formula.

Our best guess is that the advertised technology is somewhat similar to the process used in homeopathic medicine, in which the main ingredients are diluted to the point where there is barley detectable. Here too homeopathic remedies have not been proven to work. In fact some research studies have shown that it is no more effective than a placebo. Frankly, we fear this may be the case with the “technology” used in SleepMD.

The actual formula before it is “diluted” in SleepMD contains some ingredients that are proven sleep enhancers. For instance, it uses Lemon Balm extract, Hops extract and Melatonin, all of which are used in the most results oriented formulas – at full strength. Melatonin can reset the sleep/wake cycle to alleviate insomnia; Lemon balm is a proven and effective herbal sedative that can help calm users down; and Hops is a herbal extract that has been shown to be an effective method of easing restlessness and tenseness of both mind and body.

However, that said the other elements in this formula are rather disappointing in terms of helping generate sleep, yet they are extremely effective in other areas. White willow extract is very effective in alleviating aches and pains, and is often used in weight loss and fitness formulas; Valerian Extract does have some sedative abilities but its results are inconsistent and unreliable; Lavender powder is very relaxing when used in aromatherapy; Passion flower extract is most commonly found in male sexuality boosting formulas to alleviate sexual anxiety; and Coenzyme Q10 is an effective antioxidant. As you may heave noted these are in no way heavy hitting sleep aids. Frankly we could not understand why they were included in this formula.

Those consumers who are drawn to products that use “new” technology may find this product interesting; however, we believe that they will not find a solution to their insomnia with this product. This is because it uses an unproven and unsubstantiated technology, which we can in no way recommend using.

The formula does contain the three elements that we suggest consumers look for in sleep aids - Lemon Balm extract, Hops extract and Melatonin; all of which are extremely results oriented when used in full strength along with a proven technology. As mentioned earlier this formula also uses elements that have not been proven to be able to generate results in the sleep arena, which we found extremely troubling.

In the end, we strongly suggest consumers look for formulas that contain Lemon Balm extract, Hops extract and Melatonin, in order to generate the maximum results, and receive a deep and sound sleep.
